Trump blames teleprompter for his ‘airport’ debacle

0

President Donald Trump blamed a faulty teleprompter for his claim during remarks he made at a July 4th event that the Continental Army “took over the airports” during the Revolutionary War. He was severely mocked for the flub as aeroplane was invented in 1903.

“The teleprompter went out,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House for a weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey.

“It just went out – it went kaput.”

Donald Trump

During his Independence Day speech paying tribute to the military, Trump sowed confusion when he began talking about air defenses during the American Revolution, which took place more than a century before the invention of the airplane.

“Our Army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports,” Trump said of the fighting force created by the Continental Congress in 1775.

Trump didn’t even acknowledge the mistake, instead he boasted about his memory. Trump said it wasn’t pleasant to see the scrolling stop as he was delivering his highly anticipated speech.

“That’s not a good feeling when you’re standing in front of millions and millions of people,” he said. “I guess the rain knocked out the teleprompter.”

Still, he said his memory of the speech otherwise served him well. “I knew the speech very well so I was able to do it without a teleprompter,” he said. “And it was actually hard to look at anyway because of the rain.”

Here is Trump’s full riff on the American Revolution military:

“In June of 1775, the Continental Congress created a unified Army out of the Revolutionary Forces encamped around Boston and New York, and named after the great George Washington, commander in chief. The Continental Army suffered a bitter winter of Valley Forge, found glory across the waters of the Delaware and seized victory from Cornwallis of Yorktown.

“Our Army manned the air, it rammed the ramparts, it took over the airports, it did everything it had to do, and at Fort McHenry, under the rocket’s red glare it had nothing but victory. And when dawn came, their star-spangled banner waved defiant.”

Goa Airport Reopens after Fuel Spill from MiG-29K Tank incident

0

A detachable fuel tank attached to a MiG-29K aircraft fell on the runway. It spilled fuel and caused minor damage to the landing and take-off strip. Then, all the flight operations at Goa’s Dabolim International Airport were suspended on Saturday for two hours.

The airport reopened after an hour, the spokesperson confirmed. A portion of the main runway of the airport caught fire after a drop tank of a MiG-29K aircraft fell down from the jet while it was taking off, Navy spokesperson Captain DK Sharma said. This led to minor damages to the landing and take-off strip.

“Due to jettisoned fuel tank on the runway during MiG sortie the operations are closed for two hours at Goa airport. Pl bear with us,” Airport Authority of India (AAI) Goa tweeted on its official Twitter handle on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the airport said that Indian Navy personnel were present at the site and helped clean the fuel from the runway. They also carried out repair along the stretch.

“These are external fuel tanks outfitted to aircraft in order to enable them to cover more distance. One such tank attached to a MiG-29K got jettisoned off the jet during a sortie and landed on the runway,” the spokesperson told IANS.

Deflating Modiji’s 35 airport claim

0

On Monday, Sikkim’s first airport, Pakyong Airport, was inaugurated by our Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his speech, he mentioned that 100 airports are operational in India and out of them, 35 were made in the last 4 years. Let’s do a fact check and establish/ridicule his claims.

There are now 100 airports in India, out of which 35 were built in the last four years

Prime Minister Narendra Modi

No more than seven airports were made operational over the last four years.

As many as 129 airports are owned by Airport Authority of India (AAI) — of which 23 are international, 78 domestic, eight customs and 20 civil enclaves at defence airfields, according to the annual report 2017-18 of the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Of 129 airports, 101 airports — including civil enclaves — are operational and 28 are non-operational, according to replies by the government to the Lok Sabha on 19 July, 2018 and 8 August, 2018.

As many as 125 airports were owned by AAI at the end of 31 March, 2014, the aviation ministry’s annual report 2013-14 shows. Of these, 94 were operational – including 29 civil enclaves – and 31, non-operational. This indicates that seven airports were made operational over the four years ending 2018.

Pakyong Airport

Pakyong Airport is Sikkim’s first airport. The approval for the airport was given in October 2008 by UPA government. 83% work was completed till 2014. The work was delayed because of several reasons like adverse weather conditions, frequent bandhs, agitation by Gorkha Mukti Morcha, etc.

Our Opinion

So, in Modi’s tenure, only 17%  of the work was done and he took all the credit. This is similar to the claim of 100% rural electrification. Now coming to their 1 year 1 airport claim. Just after the Independence, were building airports a necessity? If yes, how many would have benefited with that? We should not forget the condition of India in 1947 with empty treasury and Pakistan being the trouble maker. Only in the last 2-3 decades, we were able to recover from the state of building necessities to building luxuries.

It is clear that the government is running on advertisements, fake claims, allegations and polarization policies. This is not a government but just a political party which wants to win elections.

Mumbai Airport becomes the busiest airport in the world

0

Mumbai airport created a new world record for single-runway operations on 20th January. The airport handled 980 arrivals and take-offs in 24 hours. With this, the Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International airport bettered its own feat of 974 flights in 24 hours, recorded on December 6, 2017.

Comparison with the Best

India’s second largest airport has the record breaking numbers but still it’s far from being most efficient. Gatwick airport, UK’s second largest airport, is still the most efficient single-runway airport in the world.

India’s second largest airport has the record breaking numbers but still it’s far from being most efficient. Gatwick airport, UK’s second largest airport, is still the most efficient single-runway airport in the world. Gatwick single runway declared an aircraft capacity of 870 flight movement per day for summer 2018. Unlike Mumbai airport, which is 24 hours functional, Gatwick handles most of its flight between 5 A.M and midnight (19 hours).

Space Crunch

According to a report by Sydney-based CAPA in 2017, Mumbai airport will reach its saturation point in 2018. “The airport currently handles 45.2 million passengers and sees around 930 flight operations per day, and will handle 48 million passengers in 2018. Reaching its saturation would mean that it will increase additional daily flights by 48 this year,” the report said.

According to a senior air traffic controller from Mumbai, the airport suffers from space crunch and cannot handle anymore extra flights. According to him, it also requires adequate planning for improving its capacity.

“The most important difference between Gatwick and Mumbai is the environment the two airports are set in. Mumbai airport functions in a space-starved, infrastructure-constrained environment, unlike any other. More flights can’t be added onto Mumbai’s single runway without a holistic approach that takes into account the ground realities, India’s regulatory framework, human factors etc,” he said.

A ray of hope

After years of delay, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is finally off the ground. The GVK Group-owned Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) won the financial bid for the ₹16,000-crore project on 12th January. In the first phase, the airport is expected to handle 10 million passengers.

Maharashtra government’s City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) will be responsible for developing the airport.

The airport project was stopped 15 years ago. Factors like Environment clearance, landowners and villagers protests on compensation were responsible for the delay. On November 22, 2010, final environmental clearance was provided by the Union Environment and Forest Ministry. However, the project could not take off as villagers and landholders refused to accept the compensation. CIDCO continues to negotiate with 950 families on providing alternative accommodation and sources of livelihood.
