Guwahati-India’s Longest River Ropeway To Be Completed

0

In the next 180 days, IndiaтАЩs longest river ropeway across river Brahmaputra will be opened for public. The time taken to reach from North Guwahati to Guwahati will be 7 minutes.

Image source: Northeast Now

It will be IndiaтАЩs longest ropeway on the river with a total length of 2 km and it will have the capacity of carrying 30 passengers in each cable car across the river. The cable car cabins for this project have been imported from Switzerland.

This project will be a huge boost for tourism in the city also helping the native to travel from the Northern part of Guwahati to Guwahati in just eight minutes. It will cut a significant amount of time taken to travel by road. The lower terminal of the ropeway is at Kachari Ghat in Panbazaar, while the upper terminal is at Rajadwar village behind Dol Govinda Temple in North Guwahati.

Safety is the utmost priority for the project and in order to ensure passengers are safe and secure during the journey, an extra reserved line for the car has been kept which will help in case there is a technical glitch with the mainline. Now, the passengers will not be stranded in the mid-way. The operating deck of the ropeway will be on the south bank of the Brahmaputra river.

The Death Toll Strikes High-Assam Flood Yet To Get Normalized

0

The conditions of flood in Assam have still not normalized with constantly increasing in the number of death tolls. Two people have been reported dead while many animals have been seen lying down dead in barren lands.

Northeast Today

In the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen up to 67 across the state and with dead toll increasingly rising in the districts of Dhemaji and Dhubri. The mighty Brahmaputra rivers have been flowing mercilessly above the danger level at Nimati-ghat in Jorhat and Dhubri district.

There are around 30,55,837 people affected in 2,283 villagers of 59 revenue circles across 18 districts namely Dhemaji, Biswanath, Darang, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat, Jorhat and Cachar.

The death tolls amongst animals have also increased with as many as 15 hog deer were killed and 15 rhinos and an elephant died of drowning. тАЬ A total of 13 wild boar, 12 sambar, six hog deer, two water buffaloes, and three porcupines have also died due to drowningтАЭ, says an official

Presently, 644 relief camps are operational in the districts of Dhemaji, Biswanath, Darrang, Barpeta, CHirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, Goalpara, Kamrup, Morigaon, Nagaon, Golaghat and Jorhat districts with 96,890 inmates and 113 тАШRelief Distribution CentresтАЩ in the districts of Darrang, Barpeta, Dhubri, kamrup, Morigaon and Golaghat.

Assam’s state-produced silk faces major threats due to the import of Fake silk

0

It all started in the year 2013 when a mob of concerned traders burnt down stocks of low-priced silk garments in Sualkuchi (Assam). The tension started due to the import of cheap, low-quality cheap silk from outside.

Assam a major producer of silk is under major threat due to few under-hands who are routinely importing fake silk to Assam. The silk is being sold at a much lower cost than the actual cost price and it becomes difficult for the customers to identify between the genuine and the sham.

Muga an endemic to Assam is the identity of the Assamese culture and their style. Similarly, Muga silk originated and is exclusively being produced in Assam. The golden Muga silk, Pat silk, and Eri silk rule the handloom industry in Assam. Sualkuchi (district) popularly known as ‘the Manchester of East‘ is a town in Assam which is considered as the main centre of handloom and textile industry. The main profession of the people living in this town is silk production and weaving.

Image source : Awesome Assam

For the Assamese people, wearing a garment of silk produced in this state is a matter of self-pride attached to emotion. It is designed with its unique signature style keeping it foreign to the other states and the communities in India.

An article published by ‘The Sentinel’ states that the Central Silk Board is encouraging sericulture farming in the states of West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh to produce Muga silk when the truth is тАУ while Muga, Eri, and Pat are produced in Assam, only Muga is strictly indigenous to this state. In another interview with Times of India Nripen Baishya of Buwari Silk emporium says тАЬWe want the duplicity of Assamese silk to be stopped immediately and the credibility of our own silk has taken an immense hit.”

Due to the bitter rise of the fraud Assam silk being imported from outside as Suwalkuchi silk, the Kamrup district administration had declared a ban on the imports. The fake-flooding in the market is in the high-rise- power loom-made Banarasi silk products are impersonated as Assam silk. The world of fashion is growing rampantly and there are competitions in the plate to catch the bigger fish in the market. In a fast fashion-centric world of claim-game, the product identity gets off-track.

Kanhaiya Kumar and others Charged with Sedition despite SC’s Stance

0

Mocking the constitutional bodies has become a new routine for the government. Even after the Supreme Court’s stance on Sedition, Delhi police filed its charge-sheet against┬аformer Jawaharlal Nehru University StudentsтАЩ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar and others in a sedition case lodged in 2016.

The police said they have evidence to proceed against former JNU Students’ Union leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya and seven students from Jammu and Kashmir – Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rassol, Bashir Bhat and Basharat.

The police alleged that Kanhaiya incited the crowd and was part of the mob that allegedly raised тАШanti-IndiaтАЩ slogans.

A case was registered on February 11, 2016, under Sections of 124 A (sedition) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC against unknown persons at Vasant Kunj (North) police station following complaints by BJP MP Maheish Girri and the ABVP.

In March 2016, a magistrate report into the event said that anti-India slogans were not raised and stated the videos were doctored to this effect. It is unclear if the police is using the same videos as evidence against the students.

Reacting to the 1,200-page charge sheet, Kanhaiya Kumar said it is “politically motivated”. “If the news is true that a charge sheet has been filed, I would like to thank police and Modi ji. The filing of charge sheet after three years, ahead of elections, clearly shows it to be politically motivated. I trust the judiciary of my country,” the former student leader told news agency ANI.

It may be recollected that on January 10, Assamese leaders and intellectuals Hiren Gohain, Akhil Gogoi and Manjit Mahanta were charged with sedition for opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. It doesn’t require a scientist to find the pattern and tag them politically motivated. Nowadays, criticizing the government means criticizing the country and it won’t take much time to charge them with treason or sedition or both.

In Bareilly, rats gulped 1000 litres of seized illegal liquor

0

Police blames the ‘drunkard’ rats as they drunk around 1000 litres of liquor. These ‘high’ mice have migrated from Bihar as their police blamed them for 9 lakh litres of missing alcohol.

According to The Times of India, some cans in which the liquor was stored were missing, while several cans were found empty with holes in them. The liquor was seized from illegal manufacturing units.

Superintendent of Police Abhinandan Singh said an inquiry would be conducted to ascertain how the liquor went missing. тАЬCantonment police station head muharrir [clerk], Naresh Pal, who was posted here recently, opened the door of the malkhana [storeroom] and found some liquor cans empty,тАЭ Singh said. тАЬHe also saw rats near the seized liquor cans.тАЭ

Rats have a history with the administration. Mice drank around 9 lakh litres of alcohol in Bihar in the past. In September 2017, two Bihar ministers had even blamed the rodents for flooding in the state. In Assam, mice destroyed currency notes worth more than Rs. 12 Lakhs. These notes were deposited in SBI ATM in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The blame game continues. Since mice don’t associate with any party, they cannot fight back the allegations. So, it is safer to allege rats and hide administrative short-comings and corruption.

Supreme Court Extends Deadline for NRC List of Assam

0

Supreme Court on Thursday extended the deadline for filing of claims and objections for inclusion of names in Assam NRC to 15 December. The Apex Court also allowed claimants to produce five more documents for the same.┬а┬а

The bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected the concerns of forgery and photoshop. State coordinator Prateek Hajela had raised these concerns initially in his report to the court. Many stakeholders, including Assam government, had demanded inclusion of all 15 documents in their affidavits.┬а

The Hajela requested the court to exclude the 1951 NRC, voter lists up to March 24, 1971, citizenship certificates, refugee registration certificates and ration cards issued prior to March 24, 1971.

Supreme Court, earlier, approved these documents:┬а

  • land documents;
  • permanent residential certificate issued from outside the state;
  • passport;
  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) insurance policy;
  • any licence or certificate issued by any government authority;
  • document showing service or employment under government or Public Sector Undertakings;
  • bank or post office accounts;
  • birth certificates issued by the competent authority;
  • educational certificate issued by Boards or Universities;
  • records or processes pertaining to court, provided they are part of a processing in a judicial or revenue court.

The Background

On 1st January 2018, the first draft of the updated NRC was released. In this list, 1.9 crore names out of total applicant pool of 3.29 crores were listed. Seven months later, in its final draft, 40.07 lakhs were left out and remaining 2.89 crores were found eligible for citizenship. (Click to Read More)

Earlier a bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman set a date for filing claims and objections beginning September 25 for 60 days.

National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam and the latest turmoil

0

On 1st January 2018, the first draft of the updated NRC was released. In this list, 1.9 crore names out of total applicant pool of 3.29 crores were listed. Seven months later, in its final draft, 40.07 lakhs were left out and remaining 2.89 crores were found eligible for citizenship. This list was released on Monday. 2.48 lakh applicants were put on hold and labelled them as D-voters.

What is NRC?

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is the list of Indian citizens of a certain state. It was first prepared in 1951, considering the census of 1951. For a personтАЩs name to be included in the updated NRC list of 2018, he/ she will have to furnish:

  • Existence of name in the legacy data: The legacy data is the collective list of the NRC data of 1951 and the electoral rolls up to midnight of 24 March 1971.
  • Proving linkage with the person whose name appears in the legacy data.┬а

This time, the state is Assam and the cutoff is 24th March 1971. The reason for this date is that the biggest wave of immigration from Bangladesh occurred after the war of 1971 when the Pakistan army crackdown forced many to flee to India. The Assam Accord of 1985 that ended the six-year anti-foreigners’ agitation decided upon the midnight of March 24, 1971 as the cut-off date.

What are D-Voters?

D-Voters are doubtful or dubious voters who are stuck in between. They could be tagged as ‘foreigners’ or become full citizens. Their status is pending. They are 2.48 lakhs in number. The state has not yet revealed the reason why they are on hold.

What Next for left outs?

Left outs will have to file for claims and objections and submit relevant documents for re-verification. The NRC office will issue claim forms from August 7 to 30, and these applicants would have to submit the forms from August 30 to September 28. Documents verification and rejection would again take place. Rejected ones will be heard in the Foreigners’ Tribunal in the High Court.
