1700 species of birds and animals can become extinct in the next 50 years

0

Human encroachment has already caused an irreparable harm to the nature. Many species in the past has become extinct due to poaching, encroachment, loss of habitat, hunting for body parts, etc. Nearly 1,700 species of amphibians, birds and mammals are likely to lose their natural habitats and face greater extinction risk by 2070 due to increased human land use.

A new study has revealed that in nearly 5 decades since 1970, 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptile species were wiped out from the face of out planet, due to human activity. A study by Ecologists at Yale University has warned that in the next 50 years 886 species of amphibians, 436 birds and 376 mammals could go extinct due to habitat loss.

The saddest part is that humans are well aware of this approaching danger. Still, they are taking actions. In fact, recently China reversed 25-year ban on Rhino and Tiger Parts. Just see yourself what we should do and what we are doing. Save environment before it becomes late.

India has the most polluted air

0

The recent data released by IQAir AirVisual and Greenpeace shows that seven out of top ten polluted cities in the world in 2018 are from India. Gurugram is the most polluted city. The rest three places went to Pakistan and Chinese cities, thus, making South Asia the most polluted region in the world.

Image source: BloombergThe index measures the presence of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, a pollutant that can fester deep in the lungs and bloodstream of human beings.
India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, makes up 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities, with five in China, two in Pakistan and one in Bangladesh. India racks up health-care costs and productivity losses from pollution of as much as 8.5 percent of gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.

The deteriorating condition of air quality in Delhi is well known. The smog near the Diwali period was like a silver lining for the air purifier companies. Also, a survey on NCR residents tells that 35% of the residents responded want to leave it forever. The result also showed the same as out of 7 cities, 4 are from NCR.

The reason for the pollution are many. Burning of stubble, wind direction, stagnant air, etc are the reasons apart from the obvious ones. In order to improve the quality of air, not only Delhites, but everyone living near the capital should take the responsibility. China did and so can we.

Oceans will be bluer and greener in color in 2100, thanks to climate change

Climate change is not only increasing the sea level but will also change the color of the ocean by 2100. A new study by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found the relation between color and climate change. The color won’t be extremely dramatic and hardly noticeable by the human eye but the change is real.

The warming planet is changing the distribution of phytoplankton across the world’s oceans. It’s well-known that seasonal changes regularly change colors, bit warmer oceans may permanently alter the mosaic of blues and greens as seen from space. In subtropical regions, warm waters will get even warmer, driving out phytoplankton populations and even marine life, in general. In water closer to poles, the warming will make the water appear greener while in subtropical regions, it will appear bluer.

“These microscopic organisms live in the water and are the base of the marine food chain,” said Stephanie Dutkiewicz, a marine ecologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the leader of the study, published Feb. 4 in the journal Nature Communications. “By being in the water, they change the color that we see by eye. If there are less of them in it, the water will be slightly bluer.”

Phytoplanktons are very small plants residing in the water bodies. They provide food for the fishes and other sea animals. They are the food chain initiator in the water bodies.  Scientists have found that climate change will likely alter the types of phytoplankton that abound in future oceans.

For their research, Dutkiewicz and her colleagues developed a computer model that simulated changes in the world’s climate from 1860 through 2100. The model assumed that global temperatures would rise by 3 degrees Celsius — which is what most scientists think will happen if no effort is made to curb greenhouse gas emissions. The simulations, which take about three weeks to run on a large array of computers, revealed we can expect our oceans to look a little different in the future.

Climate change is real though many of our leaders don’t want to believe it. This effect of the color change is a little trivial but the main issue is the decline in the population of phytoplankton. They initiate the marine food chain and without them, the sea animals would die. Let’s hope we save that the conservative estimation of 3 degrees Celsius rise doesn’t become the reality.

The rarest doomed. How much more humans will consume?

It is truly said that mother nature claims back the most bewildered gifts, it once provided to the humanity.

The human race is said to be the smartest of all the species , but the exact fact is that we’ve outsmarted all the  other creatures and now we are all leading to a greedy way towards the nature. After excavating the history , we are now excavating the nature and the creatures.

Recently, the last male specie of the second largest mammal on land, named Sudan the northern white rhinoceros was euthanized at the age of 45.Sudan had been in poor health for days and was suffering from many age related issues as well as multiple infections.

Sudan lived in the Ol Pejeta conservancy in Kenya where he was under the protection of armed guards, away from the poachers. According to the reports, there are now only two of the species and both of them are female.

“He was a gentle giant, his personality was just amazing and given his size, a lot of people were afraid of him. But there was nothing mean about him,” said Elodie Sampere , a representative for Ol Pejeta.

Sudan and his two female companions at Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya are among just five of the rare sub-species of the white rhinos left in the world and and the only ones that live in relative freedom since the other two are kept in zoos.

Experts say that the rhinos are poached for their horns which are popular in Asia for the belief that it cures various ailments. The horns are more valuable than the jewels and are sold upto $50,000 per kg. An average weighs 1-3 kg , heavy enough to convert a poacher into a millionaire , at least.

About seven years ago the western black rhino was declared extinct and the major reason was poaching. The remaining five species of rhino are now under threatened category and continuous efforts are being made to save the rhinos.
