NLSIU Students disband their protests

The students of National Law School of India University have called off their protests after receiving assurance that the relevant Supreme Court judges are expected to conclude the process of appointment of new vice-chancellor of the university.

An alumnus of the college, Gopal Sankaranarayanan has issued a statement in which he said that after being contacted by the college and the students asking for help, he made an appointment with the Chief Justice and Judges of the Supreme Court and brought up the matter to them. On Twitter, The Student Bar Association tweeted-“Our protest seems to be coming to a successful conclusion. The following statement was received from an alumnus in conversation with the CJI, who has assured that not only procedural formalities are left in the appointment and will be completed.”

After this stint, it has become more plausible for the students to get the VC of their choice, but it’s not confirmed in. After receiving the assurance, the students have disbanded their protests and will be returning to their classes from tomorrow and also will start taking their semester examinations, which were supposed to start from 23 rd September.

Talking to Maverick Times, the Vice President of the student body Divyanshu R. Badole said- “We want to stick by the decision of the Executive Council and we want to thank honorable Justice Bobde and the honorable Chief Justice of India Justice Gogoi. We respect their decision of selecting the respective candidate whoever they deem fit to lead the Institution.”

When asked whether they would take any other initiative, the vice president continued-“We won’t be taking any other initiative. From tomorrow onwards all classes will resume. Students will attend the classes normally and also our exams are going on. We had called off the protest today but today too we had a paper which we boycotted. But tomorrow students will write their papers. I know it’s painful for them, they didn’t get any preparation time but that’s how NLS is. Academic commitment is too high for us.”

The crisis took a major turn last Friday when the appointment of Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy as the VC was delayed by over 50 days. The student body had been urging the administration to complete the remaining formalities of his appointment, but all in vain.

JNU: March of Marches

0

JNU is quite different from other universities in the country. They are always in limelight due to reasons which are mostly non-academic. Just 2 years ago, JNU was protesting against the false sedition charges on its president, Kanhaiya Kumar. This time, other issues are fueling the furnace.

JNU students and professors oppose the 75% attendance rule.

On December 22, 2017, the JNU Vice-Chancellor issued a circular making 75% attendance compulsory for all students. These included M.Phil and Ph.D students too.

On January 4, 2018, students led by JNU Student Union gathered in large numbers near the administration block. The purpose was to meet with the Vice Chancellor and submit a memorandum against the circular.

Members of the student body were fined of Rs 10,000 each for ‘protesting’ as they had violated the court order. In 2016, Delhi High court had issued an order prohibiting students from protesting or holding demonstrations within 100 meters of the administration block.

Bhaskar Jyoti, a research student at JNU, said “As far as undergraduate student attendance is considered, it’s fair enough but for students like us, who are pursuing M.Phil or Ph.D. which requires research, it’s unfair for us. We need time to research and complete our thesis but with this new rule of the university, it seems almost next to impossible to complete our work within the specific period of time.”

On February 15, 2018, when the students observed the passive nature of the authorities, they decided to protest. After few days, teachers also decided to boycott the university’s decision. The JNU Teachers Association had said it was “unproductive” and would lead to the teachers doing and “meaningless” form of bureaucratic work. Later in March, the teachers organized padyatra to the Parliament. They are against the removal of several department heads and a coordinator. They were accused for not complying with the institute’s new attendance rules.

Hike in Hostel fee

The JNU administration hiked the fees of hostel facilities by up to 400%. It drew objections from students. “Much like the decision of compulsory attendance”, this decision has also been arbitrary and without any discussion with the student representatives, they claimed.

“The administration had called us for an inter-hall administration meeting on January 17. They told us about a possible hike in hostel facilities like guest and mess admission charges; fine on late payments and a hike on certain food items,” said Simone Zoya Khan, JNU student union vice-president.

JNUSU president Geeta Kumari said the minutes of the meeting had not been released yet and it is “an autocratic decision”.

JNU granted autonomy

In a first, the University Grants Commission (UGC) awarded full autonomy to as many as 62 institutions of higher education.

JNU was awarded autonomy on the basis of high NAAC score (3.5 or above). They can now start new courses, collaborate with foreign institutions and will be reviewed based on self-reporting.

These include JNU, NALSAR, Jadavpur University, Osmania University, HCU, Jammu University, National Law University and TISS, among others.

JNU against prof. Johri

The Jawaharlal Nehru University students were protesting on Wednesday, demanding the suspension of Professor Atul Johri for sexual harassment allegations levelled against him. The protests came after Delhi’s Patiala House court granted him bail within 80 minutes of his arrest.

“We want JNU to suspend him & declare that he cannot enter university premises,” said students.

Duty magistrate Ritu Singh had granted bail to Johri, a professor in the Department of Life Sciences, and directed him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 30,000 for each of the eight first information reports (FIRs) registered against him in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj North Police Station.

Over 150 scientists have signed a petition calling upon Indian scientists and “women scientists in particular” to support students of Jawaharlal Nehru University, protesting the grant of bail to Professor Atul Johri, who is accused of sexual harassment. The letter exhorts the authorities to punish sexual misconduct by “blacklisting” offenders from funding, academies and participation in scientific committees.

Harassment of reporter by SHO

Vidyadhar Singh, an SHO of Delhi Cantonment police station has been booked by the Delhi police and an FIR registered against him for alleged molestation charges on the basis of a written complaint by a woman journalist.

The complainant said she was standing in a service lane near the protest site along with a fellow journalist when the police started hitting the demonstrators with batons.

Singh pushed and groped her and other female journalists.

“Both of us at that point told Mr Singh that we are journalists and he backed off for two minutes. He then proceeded to come towards us again and hooked at my chest and placed his hand on my right breast and pushed me again,” she said in her complaint.

Concluding Views

Though it is fine to impose attendance rule on undergraduates but should not be arbitrary. Imposing attendance rule on masters and doctorate students is insane as it is completely impractical.

Hostel fee hike is inevitable but should not be that much. This would discourage under-privileged students. A hike of 10-20% is fine but not 400%.

Harassment case has already received a lot of fuel to keep nation burning for weeks. The only problem is that the public has a short-term memory and they forget very early. This should the turning point in the lives of victims and give adequate courage to come forward and speak about it.

March For Our Lives
The protest on 24 th March 2018 was named “March For Our Lives” and was largely supported by celebrities and political figures like Barack; Michelle Obama, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Amal and George Clooney. The protest was led by students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas, where shooting took place a month ago leaving 17 students dead.

The shooting killed 1 students of the school and is considered to be one of the deadliest incidents since the attack on Columbine High in 1999. Gun violence in schools in US Gun related violence in the United States of America has been increasing exponentially over the past 2 decades. According to the statistics by Department of Justice and council of External Affairs, about 11000 people died in firearm incidents in US between 2001 and 2011 and more than 187,000 students have been exposed to gun violence since the Columbine  High attacks.

The year 2018 itself has seen as many as 12 firearm related incidences across US where about 25 students, staff members, teachers and parents were shot dead and around 50 more injured and wounded. This has alarmingly raised a voice of concern amongst the students and the parents who demand stringent laws on the purchase and sell of guns in the country. 2 nd Amendment to the Constitution & Gun purchase process While there are demands and protests on strict gun laws, it is important to know why there are approximately 300 million guns in USA, nearly one for every member of its population. The answer to that lies in the 2 nd Amendment of the US constitution, which gives the citizens the right to bear fire arms in order to defend themselves. Many citizens use the 2 nd Amendment to explain the usage and purchase of the weapons. This individual arming of citizen carries institutional weight, as National Rifle Association (NRA), one of the most powerful special interest lobby groups in US, campaigns against all forms of gun control and argues that more guns make country safer. In terms of lobbying, the NRA officially spends around $3 mn per year to influence gun policy. Apart from that, the gun purchase process in US is pretty lenient and the citizen can obtain the weapon within hours of application, as against the weeks and months of procedure in countries like UK, Japan and Australia.

Hundreds of thousands of students marched on the streets of Washington DC, protesting against shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, where year old youth opened fire killing 17 students. The message of through the protest was clear and simple, ending the gun violence through stricter gun control and regulations.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students have been quick to demand action following the shooting — visiting the Florida state capital and meeting with lawmakers, while planning the march in Washington, D.C. from their parents’ living rooms. The March for Our Lives has since expanded to include other major cities across the U.S. From New York City to Los Angeles. A silver lining to the students’ action is already received as the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas have already seen results from their actions. The Florida State Legislature passed an expansive gun control measure that includes banning bump stocks, raising the age to purchase a firearm across the board from 18 to 21 institutes a three-day waiting period on gun purchases, and providing more funding to school safety and mental health resources.

Meanwhile, President Trump has criticized and condemned the attacks, he has largely been silent on the gun control. Trump has tweeted in favor of bipartisan legislation which strengthens the background checks.“While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system.” White House spokesperson said in the press conference.
