Mission Shakti: India Becomes the 4th Country to develop Anti Satellite Weapon

0

India has now become a space power. Election Commission is probing on Modi’s tweet. China wants peace in space and Pakistan wants the banishment of India. All due to one reason – Mission Shakti.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday announced that the DRDO-developed anti-satellite system A-SAT successfully destroyed a live satellite in the Low Earth Orbit. India became the 4th country, after USA, Russia, and China, to develop and test successfully an Anti Satellite (A-SAT) weapon.

What Are A-SATs?

A-SATs are missile-based systems to attack moving satellites. So far the United States, China, and Russia were the only ones who’ve reported the ability to shoot down space objects from ground or airborne sources. The development of such systems has a long history — fuelled by the Cold War between the United States and the former Soviet Union. There are different kinds of systems — those that can be launched from the ground or those vaulted from planes.

“The ASAT weapon is likely to be the most potent military tool for the armed forces over the next few decades, notwithstanding a revolutionary technological breakthrough,” according to Arvind K. John, an analyst with New Delhi-based think-tank Observer Research Foundation.

Pakistan Decries Mission Shakti and China wants peace

Pakistan called on the international community to condemn the act and strengthen international laws regarding the militarization of space. “We hope that countries which have in the past strongly condemned demonstration of similar capabilities by others will be prepared to work towards developing international instruments to prevent military threats relating to outer space,” said a spokesperson for the Pakistan government. The spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan has been a strong proponent of Prevention of Arms Race in Outer Space. He said, “Space is the common heritage of mankind and every nation has the responsibility to avoid actions which can lead to the militarization of this arena.”

China, on the other hand, was guarded in its reaction to the launch of the anti-satellite missile. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, in a written response to a question from news agency PTI on India successfully test-firing an anti-satellite missile, said: “We have noticed reports and hope that each country will uphold peace and tranquillity in outer space.” China conducted such a test in January 2007 when its anti-satellite missile destroyed a defunct weather satellite.

Election Commission probing Narendra Modi’s Speech

The Election Commission said it is studying this morning’s announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the anti-satellite missile test, Mission Shakti. The opposition parties had raised a clamor after the announcement, claiming the Prime Minister was trying to gain political points two weeks before the national elections, and that it was a violation of the Model Code of Conduct.

The Model Code is a series of dos and don’ts for the caretaker government and political parties, which comes into effect as soon as the elections are announced.

The event is a leap forward in India’s space and military technology. The accomplishment is remarkable because this technology is indigenous. China calling for peace and Pakistan’s desperation themselves proves the significance of Mission Shakti. PM’s comments might get into the radar of EC but it won’t affect much to his Propaganda. Congratulations DRDO for making our country proud.

1700 species of birds and animals can become extinct in the next 50 years

0

Human encroachment has already caused an irreparable harm to the nature. Many species in the past has become extinct due to poaching, encroachment, loss of habitat, hunting for body parts, etc. Nearly 1,700 species of amphibians, birds and mammals are likely to lose their natural habitats and face greater extinction risk by 2070 due to increased human land use.

A new study has revealed that in nearly 5 decades since 1970, 60% of mammals, birds, fish and reptile species were wiped out from the face of out planet, due to human activity. A study by Ecologists at Yale University has warned that in the next 50 years 886 species of amphibians, 436 birds and 376 mammals could go extinct due to habitat loss.

The saddest part is that humans are well aware of this approaching danger. Still, they are taking actions. In fact, recently China reversed 25-year ban on Rhino and Tiger Parts. Just see yourself what we should do and what we are doing. Save environment before it becomes late.

India has the most polluted air

0

The recent data released by IQAir AirVisual and Greenpeace shows that seven out of top ten polluted cities in the world in 2018 are from India. Gurugram is the most polluted city. The rest three places went to Pakistan and Chinese cities, thus, making South Asia the most polluted region in the world.

Image source: BloombergThe index measures the presence of fine particulate matter known as PM2.5, a pollutant that can fester deep in the lungs and bloodstream of human beings.
India, the world’s fastest-growing major economy, makes up 22 of the top 30 most polluted cities, with five in China, two in Pakistan and one in Bangladesh. India racks up health-care costs and productivity losses from pollution of as much as 8.5 percent of gross domestic product, according to the World Bank.

The deteriorating condition of air quality in Delhi is well known. The smog near the Diwali period was like a silver lining for the air purifier companies. Also, a survey on NCR residents tells that 35% of the residents responded want to leave it forever. The result also showed the same as out of 7 cities, 4 are from NCR.

The reason for the pollution are many. Burning of stubble, wind direction, stagnant air, etc are the reasons apart from the obvious ones. In order to improve the quality of air, not only Delhites, but everyone living near the capital should take the responsibility. China did and so can we.

China Reverses 25-year ban on Rhino and Tiger Parts

0

Our Take

Animal cruelty is at its all time high. According to WWF’s Living Planet Report reveals that “humanity has wiped out 60% of wildlife since the 1970s.” It also says that “Earth is losing biodiversity at a rate seen only during mass extinctions.” And shockingly, just after the release of this report, Chinese government lifts the ban on Rhino and Tiger hunting.

According to the Chinese government, they would allow the use of rhinoceros horns and tiger bones in medicine. The State Council, China’s cabinet, said in a policy directive that it would legalize the use of rhino horns and tiger bones for “medical research or in healing,” but only by certified hospitals and doctors, and only from rhinos and tigers raised in captivity, excluding zoo animals. No reason was given for the lifting of the ban, which was implemented in 1993.

Under the special circumstances, regulation on the sales and use of these products will be strengthened, and any related actions will be authorized, and the trade volume will be strictly controlled.

Statement by the Chinese Government

Tiger bone and rhino horn are used in traditional Chinese medicine. There is hardly any scientific evidence for the effectiveness of them. Chinese demand for ivory is also blamed as a driver behind the slaughter of African elephants, despite Beijing banning all trade in ivory starting from this year.

Environmentalists said the decision would likely help fuel a black market for wild rhino and tiger parts, which are revered in traditional Chinese medicine for supposed healing powers, and could lead to increased poaching of the fewer than 30,000 rhinos and 3,900 tigers still in the wild.

“It’s a devastating decision,” said Leigh Henry, director of wildlife policy at the World Wildlife Fund in Washington. “I can’t overstate the potential impact.”

The announcement on Monday threatened to undermine President Xi Jinping’s efforts to promote an image of China as a responsible environmental steward capable of tackling global issues like climate change and air pollution.

India and China Plans an “Oil Buyers Club” to counter OPEC Monopoly

0

Reason for proposing oil buyers’ Club

The OPEC basket’s price today was $73.97 per barrel. Brent Crude also rose to $76.58 per barrel. As a result, Indian Basket will cost around $74.82 per barrel as it is the weighted average of Dubai and Brent (72.58:27.42). The WTI Crude today costs $66.79 per barrel. Astonishingly around $8 per barrel difference between Indian Basket and WTI Crude.

India and China together consumed 17% of world oil consumption last year. With around 80% of total consumed oil is imported, India is in desperate need for cutting its oil bill. By dumping zealously oil into the market for decreasing the price to $28 to almost freezing production and bringing it to near $80 per barrel, we have all witnessed how OPEC can create an havoc in oil business.

Beginning of the Change

At the 16th IEF ministerial meet in April this year, India and China agreed to look for ways to leverage the combined size of their imports for a better bargain. As a result, Indian Oil Corp (IOC) chairman Sanjiv Singh met Wang Yilin, chairman of China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) in Beijing.

Earlier in 2005, then oil minister, Mani Shankar Aiyar, proposed to form an alliance with major oil consumers. He wanted to include China, Japan and South Korea. The main motive was to take up issues like premium being charged from Asian buyers. The proposal lost to the complexities of the bilateral ties between India and China.

Why should biggest consumers pay more. Why should these countries pay more in name of Asian premium,” Pradhan had said in April. “All the four major Asian economies should come together. And India will try to create a network for that within the four countries.”

Our Views

If a sellers’ group exists then a buyers’ group should also exist in order to create the balance in the Trade Universe. OPEC always enjoyed extreme monopoly and no-one had the audacity to counter them. With Shale Revolution of USA on the cards, India, China and other major importers should utilize the newly found leverage and end OPEC monopoly.

Maldives ordered India to take back 2nd Chopper

0

A setback to India’s plan to expand footprints in Indian Ocean as Maldives President Yameen officially refused to renew the Letter of Exchange of the Chopper. He also asked India to complete the process of removal of both Indian choppers by June end.

What actually Happened?

India had gifted 2 ALH helicopters to the Maldives. The Yameen government became ‘upset’ about the presence of Indian navy staff on their soil. So, now they are asking Indian government to remove its second ‘gift’ naval chopper (ALH Dhruv) from the Laamu atoll. India had stationed six pilots and over a dozen ground personnel to operate the ALHs.

The location of Laamu is significant as the China is considering building a port. This was further confirmed by the statement of Maldives ambassador to China Mohamed Faisal said earlier this year.

“Even Addu (location of the other Indian chopper) is significant as it is located at Equatorial Channel and close to Diego Garcia. It seems Male wants to rid both these strategic locations of any Indian footprint,” said a government official who didn’t want to be quoted.

Past, Present & Future of India-Maldives relations

Indian relations with Maldives were good until the current President Abdulla Yameen imposed a state of emergency for a period of 45 days. This gave him absolute powers to send security forces into the Supreme Court building. All this happened to refuse to comply with the Maldives Supreme Court decision to release imprisoned opposition lawmakers.

This incident also saw India and China on opposite ends. India wanted to restore Democracy in Maldives and China wanted India not to indulge in Maldives internal matters.

India gave cold treatment to Maldives as India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has said that even though the neighboring country has received several invitations to visit Maldives, they refrain from visiting the country since the Maldivian government has not met some of their requests.

India later set to expand its presence in the Indian Ocean and also to counter the growth of China influence. Thus, India gifted Maldives Choppers. These choppers insured India’s presence in the archipelago as well checking Chinese growth too. Now, Maldives has asked India to take them back. This would dent India’s strategic expansion.

India acts as peace-maker in the neighboring countries. Thus, India took the responsibility for free and fair elections there. It is the talk of the town that Yameen is in complete control of all state institutions including election commission and judiciary.

In the nearer future, India has to choose between the Maldives and Indonesia for the Asia-Pacific non-permanent UNSC seat. India is not sure if it wants to vote in favor of Maldives. It also doesn’t want to be on the losing side and thus, sour the relation with either of them. So, it is waiting to see if Indonesia can enlist support from 129 UN member states.

Maldives Crisis: How it began and the possible outcomes

0

What happened?

Last week, the Maldives Supreme Court ordered the release of several imprisoned opposition lawmakers ruling that their trials were politically motivated. President Abdulla Yameen refused to comply with the decision. He imposed a state of emergency for a period of 15 days. This gave him absolute powers to send security forces into the Supreme Court building on Monday.

Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed were both arrested in the early hours of Tuesday. The charges were not specified at that time. Later, they were charged with bribery and insinuation against government. After that, Yameen’s estranged half-brother, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom got the detention.

How has the world reacted?

Envoys of Maldives President first chose India for visit. The meeting could not happen as Indian leaders were not available. Later, President Yameen announced his decision to send envoys to China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

China officially continues to maintain that there should not be any external interference and India should not send its deployment.

The U.S. and the U.K. have both urged Yameen to honor the rule of law and free the detainees.

Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN) human rights chief also became active. He warned that Yameen’s state of emergency decree, was undermining the checks and balances necessary in any functioning democracy.

India vs China

China officially continues to maintain that there should not be any external interference specially in the light of reports of India’s special forces ready for deployment. Meanwhile, Chinese official sources said that China doesn’t want Maldives to become another “flash point”.

However, the relationship between India and Maldives became sour when Modi dropped the plan to visit Maldives. In March 2015, Modi was on a historic tour of neighboring countries. He dropped the plan and did not cite the cause. Yameen did not like the ignoring attitude of Indian Prime Minister.

China is building on the crumbling relationship of India and Maldives. It wants the World to respect the Sovereignty of Maldives and do not interfere on their internal matters. The stand was quite strange as on one side, China doesn’t want Maldives to become another “flash point” and on other side, taking such stand when India is planning to deploy troops. Although everything is not well between India  and China.

India must take stock, understand the game China is playing in Maldives, and not rule out military intervention from its basket of tools to mitigate a tricky situation in our neighborhood.  Any hesitation at this point will result in India permanently ceding crucial strategic space to China. We cannot afford to have a Chinese vassal state in our backyard.

War Clouds hovering again over Doklam

0

The recent satellite images of the region had shredded the veil of peace which was laboriously woven by India and China after the Summer deal. People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel have heavily occupied the near the last year’s site of confrontation. The recent build-up by China includes concrete posts, helipads, new trenches, and a concrete observation tower. This certainly indicates that China did not retreat and thus, broke the pact.

“All these structures have come up only after June 16, according to satellite images,” Vinayak Bhat, the retired colonel, who served the Indian Army for 33 years, said this after seeing the satellite image very closely. “China is trying to change the status quo in North Doklam. India must object because the entire area is Bhutanese land occupied by China.”

Government Reaction

Government is denying the reports. They ridiculed the satellite report and said that everything is Ok in Doklam. Last week, Congress cited those satellite images to accuse the government of misleading the nation. They also accused government of “snoozing” while the Chinese plan “Doklam 2.0”. In the response, government clarified that the nations are holding the status quo at the site and such reports are ridiculous and would mislead the nation.

“The Chinese build-up appears to be of a different order of magnitude than anything seen in the past and therefore should be a source of concern,” opposition lawmaker Shashi Tharoor said. “The government chose to spin the mutual disengagement from the face-off site as a major diplomatic victory. Its silence seems to have more to do with its reluctance to dilute that ‘triumph’ than with any realistic appreciation of the situation,” said Tharoor, who also heads India’s parliamentary standing committee on external affairs. The issue, he said, had come up “repeatedly” in the committee, but declined to elaborate on the “closed-door deliberations”.

India – China War Scene

Tension is not new among India and China. Currently, and the most important right now is the Doka-La issue between India and China. In June 2017, India accused China for constructing a road in the Doklam Plateau. Royal Bhutanese Army raised the objection and India intervened. China claims the Doklam Plateau that is close to Chumbi Valley at the corner of the India-Bhutan-China tri-junction near Sikkim sector.

Apart from Doklam, India has consistently saying no to the construction of road under China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. It is supposed to pass from the PoK. It can worsen the agitation in Kashmir valley. According to India, it violates its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the region.

China vetoed India’s entry into Nuclear Supplier’s Group. China tried to prevent the banning of Jaish-e-Mohammad Chief, Masood Azhar in UNSC. Territorial issues like occupying the Leh region and naming it Aksai Chin and claiming Arunachal Pradesh as its own part are still not solved. Apart from that, construction of huge dam on Brahmaputra (Tsangpo) river has not been well swallowed by Indian government.

Conclusion

Prevention is better than cure. Government should acknowledge the advancement made by Chinese Army in the region. They should act soon. India should solve other issues like NSG entry, Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as soon as possible. These issues are like gas bubbles in forging iron of our relationship with China.

चीन में रोज़ा पे लगे प्रतिबंध का भारत में दिखा असर, ‘मेड इन चाईना’ का बहिस्कार कर मुस्लिम समुदाय ने दिखाई एकता

NewBuzzIndia:

0

NewBuzzIndia | Exclusive:
