Trump backs out on his offer of mediating between India and Pakistan, calls the Kashmir issue “bilateral”

After repeatedly offering to help India and Pakistan find a common ground on the Kashmir issue, Trump has backed out on his offer, calling it a “bilateral issue”.

Trump had offered to mediate the issue on three different occasions in the past month. On all these occasions, the official US government office was in the favour of a bilateral settlement between the countries. Seems like the president and his office are on the same page again.

India has maintained its stance and has called the Kashmir issue as bilateral and scrapping of the article 370 an internal affair. Donald Trump had earlier claimed that India had asked for his help on the burning matter at hand. But the Indian government refuted the claim. Later the president’s office set the matter straight when it stated that the president had offered his help, India had not asked for it.

Prime minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to meet Trump in Biarritz, France on the side lines of the G7 summit. Even though India is not a part of the G7, the Indian premier was personally invited by the French President Emmanuel Macron to attend the summit.

After landing, Modi had his first bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Modi is also expected to take a walk and have conversation with the French President. Modi also addressed a session on biodiversity on the side lines of the prestigious summit. He highlighted India’s efforts towards reducing plastic, conserving water , harnessing solar energy and protecting flora and fauna for sustainable future.

China backs up Pakistan’s request for a meeting of the UNSC

India has learnt today that after being requested by China, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has agreed to hold a closed door meeting to discuss the Kashmir issue.

Earlier, Pakistan had requested the world body on three different occasions to discuss the changed dynamics in Kashmir, but it’s requests were denied. But after China backed it up, the UNSC has agreed to accept the prolonging request. The closed door meeting is most likely to be held on August 16, but without Pakistan in the room.

The meeting is being held to discuss the abrogation of the article 370 in the state of Jammu and Kashmir which gave special rights to the state. The former state has now been turned into a union territory.
According to sources, earlier Pakistan was seeking for an open door meeting with having the right to speak. But when it’s plea was denied, China stepped up to support Pakistan’s cause.

India had earlier told the international community that revoking the article was an internal matter and had also advised Pakistan to accept it.

Impetuous Kashmir move will have dire consequences: China

In its editorial titled “India’s unilateral Kashmir move inside , dangerous”, the Chinese government’s mouthpiece The Global Times has criticised the Indian government on its Kashmir move.

The editorial termed the move as a “wrong decision” and explicitly warned that it would have serious implications on its image. “By revoking Jammu and Kashmir’s relative autonomy and by likewise revoking a decree which forbade non-Kashmiris from buying property in the disputed territory, India’s status in relation to Kashmir has been inexorably changed from that of a party to conflict to an instigation of an unnecessary and counterproductive provocation.”

It further added- “ When Indian minister of home affairs Amit Shah loudly claimed that India seeks to establish rule over Aksai Chin in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region it, displayed an attitude of hostility against China that is incompatible with a productive partnership based on realism and shared economic goals.”

It also accused the US and the West of “conniving with India” and has urged the international community to “de escalate tensions” and also to ensure that the rights of Kashmiris are not violated.

The Global Times is published by the ruling Chinese Communist Party’s paramount mouthpiece, the people’s daily and is infamous for its hawkish and insulting editorials. Therefore, it can be concluded that such an editorial was only published to chide India.

Magsaysay awardee claims he was put under house arrest by UP police over J&K protest

On Sunday , Magsaysay award winning social activist Sandeep Pandey claimed that he , along with his wife and fellow activist Arundhati Dharu ,was put under house arrest in his Lucknow home. He alleged that it was done to keep them from organising a protest to express solidarity with the people of Kashmir. However, according to the couple, the “house arrest” was lifted after a short time.

Mr Pandey was originally supposed to lead the protest at the GPO park on Sunday evening. According to the reports published by the news agency IANS-“All of a sudden, the police arrived at our residence in four vans and told us that we cannot stage the demonstration because of prohibitory orders that would be in place until Independence Day. So I told them that we will stage our demonstration after the orders are lifted. But they remained standing outside my house not allowing anybody to enter or leave the house.”

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Kaushal Raj Sharma denied all the allegations. He said that the police had only asked Mr Pandey to shift the venue from Gandhi statue in Hazratganj to Eco gardens. Senior Superintendent of Police SSP Kalanidhi Naithani also denied the charges.

The protest march was held to oppose the center’s decision to nullify Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and turning it and Ladakh into union territories.

Pandey had won the Ramon Magsaysay award in 2002 in the emergent leadership category. But he later returned the cash received due to disapprovals of the fact that they were funded by the Ford Foundation, a US based organisation.

Kashmir newspapers protest ad ‘ban’

After Pulwama attack, government took coercive measures to deny government ads to newspapers like Greater Kashmir and Kashmir Reader. The newspapers in the valley protest by publishing blank front page and citing the incident. The Kashmir Editors Guild had earlier sought the attention of the Press Council of India and the Editors Guild to exercise their legal, ethical and professional mandate to intervene in the issue and ensure that the media was not strangulated.

Government action against the two dailies came on February 16, two days after the Pulwama attack. The government, however, did not issue any formal order and the newspapers were on February 22 informed that the ban was imposed by “higher officials” without specifying anyone.

“The government did not send us a formal order. Whoever we contacted in the government said that it was an order from the “top”,” Haji Muhammad Hayat Bhat, founder and editor of Kashmir Reader said.

Condemning the ban, the guild had said the media in Kashmir is one of the most professional and has retained its neutrality even at the cost of lives.
“It will continue to do so. The professional capacities of Kashmir media have been acknowledged world over. The Press Council of India has also issued a detailed report in 2018, detailing the issues and challenges that the Kashmir media is facing. It also addressed certain misconceptions about the media in the report. The guild also wants to reiterate that the attempts at strangulating the media is in continuation of what has happened in last more than three decades,” it said.

About the newspapers

Greater Kashmir and Kashmir Reader are English language broadsheet daily newspapers published from Srinagar.

Owned by the Greater Kashmir Communications Private Limited, the former daily began publishing as a weekly newspaper in 1987 and moved to daily publishing in 1989. The newspaper has a circulation of over 1 lakh copies per day, Rashid Makhdoomi, printer and publisher of Greater Kashmir said.

Karachi Bakery in Bengaluru forced to cover signboard amidst protests

0

A Karachi Bakery outlet in Bengaluru was forced to cover up the word ‘Karachi’ on its main name board on Friday. The protesters claimed that they believed Karachi Bakery was a Pakistan-based outlet. This comes more than a week after 44 CRPF personnel were killed in a terror attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

The mob refused to disperse from the bakery and continued to protest from 8 pm to 8:30 pm. To placate the crowd, the establishment covered up the word “Karachi” in its signboard and put up an Indian flag. There was no property damage or violence at the site. Despite the protest, the bakery continued to operate until its scheduled closing time of 11 pm.

Karachi Bakery is not a Pakistan-based outlet. It was started in Hyderabad in 1953 by Khanchand Ramnani, who migrated from Karachi during the Partition. It has since grown into a nationwide franchise.

This is however not the first time that Karachi bakery is becoming a target. In 2016, they faced a boycott campaign, as they were reported to be selling Israeli dates as part of Ramadan gift hamper. Many social media users said that sentiments of Muslims were hurt as they perceive Israel to be an aggressor in the ongoing occupation of Palestine.

The nation has seen an increase in the number of attacks targetting Kashmiris. The link between those incidents and this one is the lack of knowledge. A mob can be incited easily if the goal is similar and requires violence. They don’t care about knowing the history of a place. People running the Karachi Bakery are Indians and doesn’t have any connection with Pakistan. Please maintain peace and think before attacking. We are somehow injuring our nation only through these actions.

Beware: This image of terrorist Kamran is Photoshopped

0

The mastermind behind Pulwama attack died along with 2 other terrorists in an encounter which also took the lives of our four brave soldiers. The image regulated in the media is Photoshopped. Let’s know how.

The image was basically of a commando in a black uniform. The maker of the image cleverly fitted the head in this image. The left side of the arm is abnormally stuffed into the uniform. Besides, the uniform also has a name badge. The terrorist is also wearing a watch. He is also holding a walkie-talkie.

Walkie-talkie could be excused as terrorists have become technologically advanced due to proper funding from Pakistan. He has a name tag. Which terrorists’ organisation issue name badges to its terrorists? They always want to keep them under cover. Now coming to arms. Since the maker found a suitable head and body, the original torso was not convincing due to angle and face to body ratio. So, they inserted the left arm abnormally into the image in order to look convincing. The maker tried it’s best to make the image look intimidating.

In short, the image editor was not professional. He was careless. Conspirators, hire someone better next time.

The mastermind behind Pulwama attack is now dead

Giving the open charge to army has worked. They gunned down the mastermind behind the Pulwama attack. Ghazi Abdul Rasheed, the mastermind behind the dreadful Pulwama attack, was among the three Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists killed in the encounter, which claimed the lives of four army personnel, including a major.

After receiving the orders to act freely, India armed forces intensified its operations to hunt down terrorists after the Pulwama IED attack on February 14.

Kamran alias Ghazi Rasheed was encountered by the Indian Army along with two other terrorists. A joint team of 55 Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF, and Special Operation Group launched a cordon and search operation early on Monday, after receiving inputs on terrorists taking refuge in the area.

The 32-year-old, a Pakistani national, was a close and trusted aide of JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar. He was an Afghan war veteran and an IED specialist and joined the terror group in 2008. Reportedly, Ghazi had trained Pulwama suicide bomber Adil Dar and was commanding all Jaish operations in India. Ghazi was trained by the Taliban in Afghanistan and would train Jaish recruits in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir.

One AK-47 rifle and one pistol were recovered from the militants at the encounter site. Meanwhile, Pakistan violated ceasefire in the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday night. A cordon and search operation by the security forces was also started in Krawora village of the Shopian district.

Though this won’t bring back our martyred soldiers but would at least bring some justice to their souls.
