The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has claimed that it has planted 24000 trees across the city. The video claiming the tree plantation was put up a on a social networking site. The move comes after the MMRC was criticised for cutting down trees in the Aarey forest for building a car shed.

Hours after Mumbai Metro tweeted the video, MMRC MD Bhide tweeted – “Sometimes to construct something new destruction become inevitable but it also paves the way for new life and new creation.” Over 2100 trees have been axed out to build the car shed for the metro.

A special bench of the supreme court on Monday ordered the Maharashtra government to ensure that no more trees are further cut down in the colony. The court passed the directive after hearing a suo moto PIL based on a letter written by a group of law students to the court against the felling of trees and has also said that all other petitions in the matter would be heard on October 21. The activists who were arrested for protesting have also been released.

The matter had gone out of hand when the officials cut down nearly 1500 trees on Saturday leading to protests by green activists. After the protests intensified, the police had arrested 29 protestors and imposed section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Aarey Colony and surrounding areas.

Mumbai police make a new record, collects ₹139 crores in traffic penalties

Mumbai police are always in the news for their inventive method of keeping a check on crime. This time, they are in news for collecting a record ₹139 crores from traffic rules violators in 2018.

The amount collected in the previous year for the offense was ₹8.6 crores. The new system of E-challan is being credited for this achievement. “This technology-whereby an officer can simply issue an ‘e-challan’ from his mobile phone – has not only reduced corruption on the road but resulted in a massive collection of fines for the government coffers”-says RTI activist
Jeetendra Ghadge (as told to IANS).

According to the RTI, the number of drinking and driving cases has also reduced by a lot in the last three years. From 20,768 in 2016 to 11,711 in 2018, the figures speak for themselves. While 1,854 teachers were involved in such cases, the number was 367 for women at the same time duration.

From 2015 to 2019, there were a total of 77,455 in such instances. But licenses of only around 14% of the total offenders were suspended, according to the RTI figures.

SpiceJet aircraft overshot the runway, 201 flights got cancelled

Blame it on poor training or the rain in Mumbai, a SpiceJet aircraft got stuck on the runway. This led to the cancellation of 201 flights and delaying of 370 more. The plane remained stuck on the runway and could not be cleared until late Tuesday as the only Disabled Aircraft Retrieval Kit (DARK) in India was in Mangaluru to clear an Air India Express plane, which overshot the runway there on Sunday.

An Air India official said there is just one DARK in South Asia. “It is with Air India. As per the regulations, we have to send it to wherever it is required. Air India had sent the kit to Kathmandu once to retrieve an aircraft. Airlines refrain from buying their kit because of the heavy capital investment and maintenance cost,’’ the official said on condition of anonymity. He said the need for DARK at two different airports at the same time is rare. “…airlines feel such incidents happen rarely.” The kit reached Mumbai around 1 pm Tuesday.

DARK is used whenever aircraft get stuck in soft surfaces after veering off from runways. It is placed below the stuck portion of an aircraft and then blown like a balloon to lift it.

Aviation safety expert Mohan Ranganathan said the Mumbai incident reflects “very, very, poor training” on part of the airline. “Landing in rainy conditions is not difficult at all if the training is proper. Also, it is time for the ministry of civil aviation and aviation regulator to intervene before any tragedy.” Ranganathan said an airport must have equipments to retrieve aircraft in four hours in such situations to get a license.

“Crew should be encouraged to go-around [abort landing] when approach becomes unstabilised or in case of any condition which reduces visual references to enable a safe landing. The crew rostering should factor in the fatigue element associated with the operations during the adverse weather conditions,” said a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) circular.

Kabir Singh negatively portraying doctors, Mumbai Doctor writes to Health Minister

Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer Kabir Singh has become an instant hit. The film portrays a self destructive doctor. The dark character of Kabir Singh didn’t go well in doctor community. A Mumbai based doctor, Dr. Pradeep Ghatge, writes to the health minister, stating his concern over the image it forms for the doctors.

“They have shown absolute nonsense in the movie. Cracking an MBBS exam itself is a very difficult task. How can an alcoholic person with bad habits top the university exam? Doctors will surely stand against this movie. We need to maintain the image of doctors in the society,” Ghatge said while speaking to ANI.

Ghatge also said that the Censor Board should take action against such movies.

“Today, due to the situation of doctors in the county, many are choosing not to join this profession. The Censor Board should take action against the movie. In future, Censor Board should involve Indian Medical Association when movies like these are made,” he said.

‘Kabir Singh’ is the Hindi remake of Telugu hit ‘Arjun Reddy.’ The original blockbuster starred Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey.

Mumbai Police arrests the doctor for ‘Anti-Pragya Thakur’ Posts

Just a few days ago, BJP was bearing the flag of Free Speech when its Youth Leader, Priyanka Sharma was arrested. Now, it has taken the U-turn and arresting the Homeopathic doctor for posting against Pragya Thakur. The only difference is, Pragya Thakur is not actively involved in the arrest.

The doctor, Sunil Kumar Nishad, was arrested on May 15, the police said. Based on activist Ravindra Tiwari’s complaints, an FIR has been registered against the doctor for deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting the religion or religious beliefs.

As per ANI, some of the doctor’s posts were allegedly against BJP’s Bhopal candidate Pragya Singh Thakur. On his Facebook page, Nishad – a resident of Vikhroli – identifies himself as a BAMCEF member. BAMCEF stands for The Minority Communities Employees Federation that was launched by BSP’s Kanshi Ram.

Senior inspector Vilas Jadhav told the English daily: “Based on the statement given by Tiwari, we registered an FIR under Section 295 (A) of the IPC (Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).”

Tiwari, who filed the FIR, told the daily that Nishad had been uploading posts – which he called as being against Hindus and Brahmins – for the past two years. He said that Nishad lives in the same locality as him and he had “tried to tell him through others that he should not put up such posts. He said if we had a problem, we should complain to the police.”

Tiwari claimed that a similar police complaint against the doctor was submitted about six months ago by another local resident.

Though it is up to the court to decide whether the post were as venomous as it is being told or just an exaggeration.
